Jackfruit leaf/leaves
The Jackfruit tree leaf/leaves, thriving in tropical lowlands, is extensively cultivated in the Tropical Region, notably in India. Scientifically termed Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., it’s a tropical climacteric fruit from the Moraceae family, native to the Western Ghats of India and prevalent across Asia, Africa, and parts of South America.
Its leaves, arranged alternately and spirally, are gummy and thick with a distinct petiole and blade. The petiole measures 2.5 to 7.5 cm (1 to 3 inches), while the leathery blade ranges from 20 to 40 cm (7 to 15 inches) in length and 7.5 to 18 cm (3 to 7 inches) in width, typically oblong to ovate.
Moreover, jackfruit leaf extract exhibits notable antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, and Salmonella enterica, underscoring its potential in medicinal applications.
