Chinese orange plant
The Chinese orange plant (Citrus sinensis) is a versatile and widely cultivated species of citrus tree native to China. This small to medium-sized tree can grow up to 15 feet tall and is characterized by its evergreen leaves and fragrant white flowers.
The Chinese orange plant produces bright orange fruits that are round or oval in shape, featuring a thin skin and juicy, sweet flesh. These fruits are popular for their delightful flavor, making them ideal for fresh consumption, cooking, and juicing.
Beyond its culinary uses, the Chinese orange plant is renowned for its medicinal properties. The peel and oil of the fruit are traditionally used to treat various ailments, including indigestion and colds. This makes the Chinese orange tree not only a delicious fruit but also a valuable addition to natural medicine cabinets.
A related variety, known as the bush orange or Calamondin, is a small bushy shrub-like tree. It produces an abundance of small, lime-sized sour oranges with a very thin peel. Despite their sourness, these highly flavored fruits are incredibly versatile.
They can be squeezed and sweetened to make refreshing orange juice, pickled for a tangy treat, or used in baking and cooking to add a burst of citrus flavor.
