Mandar plant
The Mandar plant (Calotropis gigantea), also known as Aak or Arka, is a large shrub that can grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) tall. It features clusters of waxy flowers, either white or lavender, with five pointed petals and a distinctive crown-like structure at the center holding the stamens.
The plant has oval, light green leaves and a milky stem, containing latex rich in cardiac glycosides, fatty acids, and calcium oxalate. The roots contain a compound called calotropone.
To cultivate a Mandar plant, start by choosing a healthy sapling from a nursery. Plant it in well-draining soil in a sunny location, as the plant thrives in full sunlight. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, especially during dry spells, and consider mulching around the base to retain moisture. For taller stems, provide support to prevent them from bending or breaking.
Be vigilant about monitoring for pests and diseases, treating any issues promptly. The plant produces twin seed pods; allow them to mature fully before harvesting and storing the seeds for future planting.
Despite its drought resistance and milky sap, the Mandar plant is poisonous. However, it has certain medicinal uses, particularly in traditional medicine. In addition to its practical uses, the Mandar plant is often cultivated for ornamental purposes. It can be grown as a hedge or trained as a small tree in areas with mild winters. In colder climates, it is best grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter. The plant’s striking appearance makes it a popular choice for indoor decor, particularly in living rooms and terrace areas.
